- Recycling
- Not all of the
armamentarium orthodontists use lends itself equally to reuse. The strange part is that
the least reusable ones are those generally accepted for the purpose. Indeed, many
stainless steel instruments do not have to withstand the conditions required of
orthodontic appliances and are consequently made of poorer materials. Non-stainless steel
devices are at a disadvantage from the very beginning. In contrast, even the most delicate
direct bonding brackets have been successfully reused several times after Ortho-Cycle's
recycling. Thus, after starting with fifty cases of brackets and successively reusing
these brackets three times, a clinician was left with thirty cases ready for a fourth
cycle (Buchwald A, Am. J. Orthod. Dentofac. Orthop. 1989; 95: 325). What usually
harms the attachments is the
debonding: a thorough checking, however, allows elimination of the damaged ones.
